What operating systems can I use with Blackboard?

Blackboard is compatible with:
  • Windows operating systems: Windows 7, Windows Vista 32-bit & 64 bit, and Windows XP
  • Mac operating systems: Mac OS 10.6, Mac OS 10.5, and Mac OS 10.4

What word processing software do I need when taking online courses?

The recommended software for course work is the Microsoft Office Home and Student edition with Word, PowerPoint, and/or Excel. Your instructor may have other requirements, depending on the course. Do not upload Word Perfect documents to Blackboard.

What Internet browsers are compatible with Blackboard?

Firefox is the recommended browser for Blackboard.
You can download Firefox for free at Mozilla Firefox www.mozilla.com/en-US
For the Windows operating systems Blackboard is compatible with:
- Internet Explorer 7.0 and 8.0
- Mozilla Firefox 3.5 and 3.6
For the Macintosh operating systems Blackboard is compatible with:
- Mozilla Firefox 3.5 and 3.6
- Safari 4.0 and 3.0 and Safari 2.0 (supports Text Editor Lite)
  • Blackboard is not compatible with Firefox 3.0 for Windows 7 and Mac OS 10.6.
  • Blackboard is not compatible with Safari 3.0 for Mac OS 10.6

How do I turn off/disable Pop-up Blockers?

  • For Internet Explorer, select Tools from the Menu Bar, select Pop-up Blocker, and select Turn Off Pop-up Blocker.
  • For Firefox, select Tools from the Menu Bar and select Options.... Select Content from the icon menu bar and uncheck the box next to Block pop-up windows.

How do I enable cookies for Internet Explorer?

To enable cookies support when using Internet Explorer, complete the following steps:
  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. Click Tools on the menu at the top
  3. Click Internet Options
  4. Click the Privacy tab
  5. Click the Advanced button
  6. Select Override automatic cookie handling

To enable cookies support when using Safari, complete the following steps:
  1. Open Safari

  4. Check Enable Java
  5. Check Enable JavaScript
  6. Select one of the two options that allow Safari to accept cookies:
    • Only for sites you navigate to

Java

How do I test if Java is installed and working on my computer?

Blackboard requires Java.
Visit http://www.java.com or http://www.java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp
to test whether Java is working on your computer and what version is installed.

How do I clear my Java cache?

To clear your Java cache in Windows:
  1. Click Start > Control Panel.
  2. Locate and double click the Java icon in the Control Panel.
  3. Click Settings under Temporary Internet Files.
  4. Click Delete Files.
  5. Select all boxes and click OK on Delete Temporary Files window.
  6. Note: This deletes all the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the cache.
  7. Click OK on Temporary Files Settings window.
  8. Click OK to close the Java Control Panel.

To clear your Java cache in Mac OS X:

  1. Double click your Macintosh hard drive.
  2. Double click Applications.
  3. Double click Utilities.
  4. Double click Java Preferences.
  5. Click the Network tab.
  6. Click the Delete Files... button.
  7. You are prompted to delete your temporary files for Java. Make sure all boxes are selected with check marks. Click OK.
  8. Close the Java Preferences window.

PDFs

When I try to open a PDF file, it does not appear in the web browser window. What do I do?

You may need to update or install the latest version of Adobe Reader compatible with your operating system.

To install or update your Adobe Reader go to http://get.adobe.com/reader/

I get an error message when I open a PDF.

If you get a message that one or more Adobe PDF Extensions are disabled, use the following steps to fix the problem.
  1. Open Internet Options in Control Panel and click the Advanced tab.
  2. Select the check box, Enable Third-Party Browser Extensions.
  3. Click OK, and then restart your computer.

I can't see the images in a PDF, what do I do?

In the Preferences dialog box, choose Page Display, and then select Show Large Images.

What do I need to know about PDF fill in forms?

Start by selecting either the Hand tool or the Select tool. When you place the pointer over an interactive form field, the pointer icon changes to one of the following:
  • The Pointing Finger or Pointing Hand Plus tool appears when the pointer is over a button, radio button, check box, or item in a list.
  • The Select tool appears when you can select an item in a list.
  • The I-beam tool appears when you can type text into a form field.
Move from one form field to the next by pressing the Tab key. To delete an entry, press the Esc key. When you finish the form, click the Submit Form button. If the PDF author has enabled the local save capability on the form, you can also choose File > Save As to rename the file and save the form with your information without submitting it.

I can’t open a Word 2007 document. Why and what should I do?

It could be that the Word document is incompatible the version of Word you are currently using. For example, Word 2003 is not compatible with and cannot open newer Word 2007 or 2010 documents. If you are using Word 2003 you can install a Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack to be able to open later versions of Word .

What version of Word should I use when submitting assignments or sharing documents?

You can use Word 2003, 2007, or 2010. However, if you use Word 2003 you cannot open Word 2007 or 2010 unless you install a Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack.
